[gunstradio] GUNST:

For GUNSTradio, miss.gunst walks beyond well-worn paths through the theme-parcs of contemporary art and media cultures to collect mirabilia for her specimen box. Selected items are presented in theme based shows and invite to more extended excursions into further fields like the histories of art, media and science.
Moreover, GUNSTradio has strong preferences for experperimental formats and regularly features sound art productions.
GUNSTradio is brodcasting since september 1997.

The router is used as an autonomous gallery space to show digital artworks. Artworks are distributed by the router through its local network with no Internet connection; all artworks are accessible at the local site only. Artworks are presented on a small web server included on the router, with access granted through an open WLAN/WiFi. The format brings both the intimate character of Net-Art-Activities back to a site-specific relation and opens up new possibilities for a discursive reception in a public situation.

The Day My Internet Art Paid Off! is an exhibition featuring works by Željko Badurina, Maja Čule, Hrvoje Hiršl, Dina Karadžić, Tea Stražičić and Igor Štromajer, all of which touch upon different economic aspects dictated by the new relations on the web.

The works are inspired by phenomena on the web, which is reflected in their concept, production, understanding and reception. They are symptoms, but also the consequences of Internet reality, some of them only available online. By translating them into a gallery, the boundaries between the material and the virtual world become even more blurry.

Tabs, procrastination, self-promotion, collaboration, spam, comment sections, shares, likes – these are all fragments, be it material or digital, of circulating data. On the web, the circulation performed by numerous users gives value and power to the transfer of information. Therefore, Internet economies do not only allude to typical digital financial transfer protocols, but are also based, to a large extent, on generating symbolic capital, i.e., values. Bearing in mind the context of the web as a corporate and supervised medium, the exhibition brings to the forefront the artist’s reactionary role in relation to the economic models developed on the 2.0 web.

g22

Assuming that Internet reality today impacts the way we act, socialise and think, the exhibition examines how the Internet and digital economies influence the life and position in society of the people who use them. That is to say, the users are the ones who provide information online in exchange for freedom, agreeing to be resourced to particular corporations, or, as Andrew Lewis put it in 2010, if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product. This is why the exhibition pinpoints the intersections of apparently divided worlds within the existing economic setup; on the one hand, the production itself is marked by the current economic state, while on the other, the online world is the extraordinary place of exploitation and experimentation.

From 17 September to 9 October, the »Ascents« light art festival will enable visitors to discover flights of steps, vantage points, Stuttgart’s famous »Stäffele« steps, towers and other ascents from a new perspective. The festival‘s curator, Joachim Fleischer, has invited more than 40 artists from 10 different countries to draw inspiration from the many different places of ascent in the region. All these unique installations can be viewed every day from 8 pm to 12 midnight in 25 different towns and cities.

Slovenian-born multimedia artist Igor Štromajer sends out a coded message from the watchtower in Esslingen to the town below. The lights that blink from the windows of the watchtower are relaying a message in Morse code. A clue to the meaning of this message is provided in the name of his work »Im Menschen lebt der Gedanke!« (»Thoughts live in people!«). Štromajer leaves it to the observer to either decode the message or simply enjoy the sensory perceptions.

This year, the European Media Art Festival queries the importance and impact of strategies for the future. It is taken for granted that the debate on how to shape societies, their economies and cultures necessarily involves looking to the future, creating drafts and scenarios, speculating and having visions. However, it should also be a matter of course to ask: who creates these visions, who could have an interest in the implementation of these plans, and whose purpose do these strategies actually serve?

EXPUNCTION
Deleting Net Art Works, 2011

10-mg-e-01

#

Memory is there to deceive.

Expunction is a project by mobile Internet communicator Igor Štromajer. Between 11 May and 16 June 2011, Štromajer, a pioneer of net art both in Slovenia and worldwide, ritually deleted a number of his classical net art works produced between 1996 and 2007. He expunged one net art project per day, permanently deleting it from his online server, so that the projects are no longer available at the Intima Virtual Base. He deleted 37 net art works altogether, amounting to 3,288 files or 101.72 MB.

Those of Štromajer’s projects that were not on the Intima Virtual Base online server at the time of expunction but are permanently loaded on the servers of the galleries and museums that have acquired them through purchases or donations (Centre Pompidou in Paris, Ars Electronica Lab in Linz, Computer Fine Arts Gallery in New York, MNCA Reina Sofía in Madrid, etc.) were (and still are) inaccessible to the artist for deletion.

The Expunction project broaches the questions of temporality, duration, archiving, and accessibility of (net) art works that automatically change over time as the hardware and software change (browsers, players, applications etc.), slowly but inexorably losing their functionality and consequently also their content. The artist’s basic premise in this project was that whoever creates, programs, and composes art is also entitled to deprogram, deconstruct, and delete it. This is not an act of violence or destruction, but rather the observation of the natural rhythm of birth, life, and death, cyclically repeated and oscillating in natural amplitudes. In a way, Štromajer has erased history, including his own personal history, since he believes our memory serves to deceive us, to misrepresent rather than paint and describe the past. A deceptive memory can be erased without qualms, since it does not portray a real picture of the past it speaks of, but always only a deceptive, distorted image. For this reason the deleted works or their remaining fragments, undeletable once they have been made publicly accessible since the World Wide Web is so widely spread and fragmentary, tell us much more about the originals (original works) than the originals themselves. With its empty slot and precise documentation, a nonexistent work, or rather its absence, points out the ephemerality of a net art work, telling at the same time much more about the deleted work than the so-called actual original could.

10-mg-e-002

Number of deleted net art works: 37
Number of deleted files: 3.288
Amount of deleted files: 101.72 MB

– Deletion frequency: one (1) net art work per day
– Started: 11 May 2011
– Duration: 37 days (last project deleted on 16 June 2011)
– Subject: net art works by Igor Štromajer, created between 2007 to 1996, were being deleted, erased from the original intima.org server
